2026 World Car of the Year Top 10 Finalists - Are they Joking?!
2026 World Car of the Year
World Car of the Year: Vehicles eligible for World Car of the Year must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units/year, must be priced below the luxury-car level in their primary markets, and must be “on-sale” in at least two major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, USA) on at least two separate continents within the period January 1, 2025 and March 30, 2026.
Multi-category Entries: Vehicles in the World Performance Car, World Urban Car, World Electric Vehicle and World Car Design of the Year categories may also be contenders in the overall “World Car of the Year” class, depending on type and pricing.

The finalist is a joke for pro-Chinese-BEV people for sure. (Seal 6 DM-i is plugin hybrid, not pure EV.)
There are suspicions that this is maybe a marketing ploy, as NONE OF THE MANY Chinese cars on the list made it to the finalist except for one.
(h0ngcom put the bold text on them. The Mazda 6e/EZ-6 is also a ChangAn Deepal-based, but the Japanese brand makes it really acceptable in the social, however, it did not win a finalist rank too.)
BYD spends a lot on marketing and advertising in various ways, which is disliked by eViking, a YouTuber with marketing background (and he also pro-Xpeng and pro-Zeekr/Geely).
As a BYD fan, h0ngcom agrees that BYD sponsors too many events and having too many ads to the point of being annoying me and some people, even if its intention is likely to make itself a normal and common thing/brand like Toyota. (Toyota in Thailand does many ads too, but Toyota is really a normal thing/brand, so it's not annoying much, compared with not-normal BYD thing/brand.)
Many Hyundai and Kia cars are in the finalist, similar to previous years.
h0ngcom think 2026 World Urban Car may satisfied him more, since there are THREE Chinese choices out of five !!!

In my opinion, Thailand's new ICE cars will be continuing to be around 70-90 percent due to the most or the all affordable EV car choices are Chinese, until the day Japanese brands especially Toyota and Honda release the truly affordable EVs.
It will never reach less than 25 percent because of the pickup truck culture ("one car can use for all purposes"), until the day EV pickup trucks can be fully replace diesel pickup trucks (very fast charging, very durable, very reliable, very long lifetime of both the car, the motors and the battery pack, inexpensive and easy to fix, etc.) --h0ngcom.
